Loughton, Lucton or Luketown is a manor that was bestowed by Harold II on his Abbey at Waltham. It was a village that was formed on seven hills; York Hill, Traps Hill, Church Hill, Staples Hill, Baldwins Hill, Goldings Hill and Albion Hill.It was in Loughton that Dick Turpin had his cave, in the hollow beneath the camp at High Beech – according to legend his Ghost still haunts Traps Hill where he tortured a lady to death to find the whereabouts of her money.
